Top Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about becoming an NVQ A1 Assessor

1.  What do I have to do on the course to get the A1 Award?

    -  1 day classroom training
    -  3 assessments of candidates (the first observed by us, the second observed by an Independent Assessor)
    -  Complete your Portfolio of Evidence to show our Awarding Body that you have met the A1 requirements

2.  I am out of work - can I do the A1 course?

    -  You will need to be able to access candidates in the workplace - this can be part-time or voluntary work.

3.  How should I prepare for the A1 Assessor course before committing to it?

    -  Be clear about which NVQ title your experience allows you to assess (see FAQ.7 below)
    -  Check that you meet the Assessor Experience Requirements
    -  If employment is your goal, seek advice from recruitment or career agencies, or research online

4.  How long will it take to be qualified as an NVQ A1 Assessor?

    -  The classroom training takes a day, and you should be able to complete your Portfolio in a few weeks.
    -  You won’t receive your Certificate until at least 10 weeks has elapsed since your Registration; however...
    -  ...you can operate as an Assessor once you have done the classroom training.

5.  How will I operate as an NVQ Assessor, and can I operate as a freelance Assessor?

    -  You must operate through an Approved NVQ Centre that delivers the NVQ you want to assess.
    -  You can be freelance in the sense that you can assess candidates through more than one Centre.

6.  How can I find out where my nearest Centres are that deliver the NVQs I want to assess?

    -  Try researching online “NVQ Courses+your NVQ Title”; or,
    -  Try a careers advice website, such as the search for NVQ course providers at:  Careers Advice UK  

7.  How do I know if my work experience is sufficient to enable me to assess the NVQs I want?

    -  Try an internet search for “NVQ+ title+ Level + assessor requirements +/or Guide to Centres”
    -  Bear in mind that not all Awarding Bodies make it easy to find out what the experience requirements are.
    -  If you are still struggling you can request a Search & Experience Match Report (SEMR) from ATD at a cost          of £50+VAT (refundable if you take up the A1 course with ATD within 6 months).  

8.  Do I need the A2 as well as the A1?

    -  No.  The A2 covers only a limited aspect of assessing, which is included in the A1.

9.  Is there any funding to help me do the A1 Assessor Course?

     -  If you have been made redundant, or have been served redundancy notice, you may be eligible for                   support for training, including the A1 Assessor Course, called Response redundancy support.  Click here            for more information on funding.
